My Vacation - June 27 - July 1, 2005

June 27, 2005 Depart Macon on Groome to Atlanta.

I flew on Delta Airlines to Fort Lauderdale and stayed at the Sea Club Resort at the beach.

Tuesday I flew to Cancun on Spirit Air, and took the bus to Playa del Carmen for 65pesos.

Arrived in Playa Del Carmen checked in to the Popol-Vuh Camping Cabanas the the end of Calle 2 by the beach.

Here was my room:
No air but I had a toilet, sink and shower. I am glad I brought toilet paper, since it is not included in the room.
There was a towel and a bar of rosy smelling soap.

After checking in I went to Sky Dive Playa Where I did a Tandem Jump with Victor Fernandez:

After the Jump I went to Phantom Divers and signed up for the Discover Scuba and 2 tank dives. Then it was Cerveza time.
I hit a few clubs/restaurants and had about 3 beers that evening and drank 2 liters of water. Since I was diving in the morning I didn't
want to over beber. I am not in good enough shape to drink and dive. The next morning I got up early and watched the sunrise.

There is nothing like this in Payne City!

Time To Dive!
First Stop was Tortugas Reef.

I had some ballast issues and my mask leaked a bit so I had to keep clearing it.
It was my first dive and I got a lot of experience that made the second dive much better.

I used up too much air trying to get my ballast issues under control and purging my mask of water.
Since my air was getting low the last 5 minutes was on the instructors tank.

I knew now that I had gotten good control over myself in this environment. Remembering my hitchhikers guide... first Don't Panic!
31minutes on bottom 60ft

After surfacing we went to Barracuda reef where there were more interesting things waiting for us.
I changed out masks and this one sealed much better. we figured out my weights and all was ok after that.

It started to rain so we had to hurry and get into the water before we got wet. heh....heh

SEA MONSTERS!!!!!

Aergio, my instructor, was about to sit on a turtle while he was taking this picture of me.

40 minutes on bottom 50ft

It was then back to the shore..

The next day it was off to Valladolid, and the ruins at Ek-Balam.

2 1/2 hour bus ride to Valladolid. 71 pesos from Playa Del Carmen.

There is one bus a day that leaves at 9:00am and returns at 1:00pm from the main square and costs only 40pesos. I arrived there about 11am so that was not an option. The collectivos had nobody going to Ek-Balam since hardly anyone has heard of it. They tried to sell me on a trip to Chichen-Itza.. I said no gracias and took a taxi to Ek-Balam 300pesos Round Trip.

I will make a separate journal for Ek-Balam, but I'll put some of the pictures here now.

I took the second class bus to Cancun from Valladolid 66pesos 3 1/2 hours.

Reaching the Cancun Radisson hotel at 6pm just after they closed the swim-up bar in the pool... drats!

the next morning it was off to Fort Lauderdale. I picked up a rental car and drive to key west for the night.
Returned Saturday to Fort Lauderdale and flew to Atlanta Saturday night.
